Engine misfire — find it without guessing

Use this when the engine shakes, a cylinder misfire code (like P0302) shows up, or you smell raw fuel.

Tools

  • Code reader (or TorqMind notes from your scanner)
  • Spark-plug socket + ratchet
  • Dielectric grease
  • Flashlight

Safety

  • Engine can be hot — let it cool if you need to pull plugs.
  • Keep hair and sleeves away from belts if the engine is running for a listen test.
  • Don’t spray flammables into a running intake.

Step 1 of 5

Read the code and write it down

Note the exact code (example: P0302 = cylinder 2). Also note if it’s random (P0300) or one cylinder.

What “good” looks like: One cylinder vs random — that decides coil vs fuel vs mechanical next.

Stop if…

  • You hear rod knock or see metal in the oil — stop and get a professional opinion.
  • Coolant is disappearing with no external leak — don’t keep driving it hot.
